The role of a social worker is to provide support to those people who have been socially excluded or who are experiencing crisis. Acting as an adviser, advocate, counsellor or listener, a social worker helps people to live more successfully within their local communities by helping them find solutions to their problems. Social work also involves engaging not only with clients themselves but their families and friends as well as working closely with other organisations including the police, NHS, schools and probation service.
Social workers are professionally qualified staff who assess the needs of service users and plan the individual packages of care and support that best help them. Becoming a social worker involves taking an honours degree in social work. However, almost all social workers start their careers with experience in social care and qualified social work professionals are often supported by social work assistants.
There is currently a shortage of qualified social workers, especially in London and the South East of England, making this industry highly accessible and rewarding.
With courses ranging from Counselling to Crime and the Community, all of these courses will give you an excellent introduction to Social Care and give you the required knowledge to succeed.
