OVERVIEW

As the need for counselling is recognised more and more in society and as the stigma attached to the concept is gradually being removed, there has become an increase in need for such services.

An Introduction To Counselling course provides a starting point for people interested in pursuing a career in counselling or those who simply want to know more.

Counselling courses will provide a good grounding in terms of its cultural and historical origins, different theoretical orientations and the vital role of the counselling relationship in enabling growth and change. In addition, basic skills in listening, attending and responding appropriately will be introduced and developed through audio-visual materials and structured self-directed activities.

Modules Studied:
Module 1: The Basics of Counselling
Module 2: Types of Counselling
Module 3: New wave Counselling
Module 4: Traditional Counselling Styles
Module 5: Listening Skills
Module 6: Negotiation
Module 7: Mediation
Module 8: Crisis Mediation

Prospects

Whilst an introduction to counselling course will not qualify students to practise counselling, it does meet the needs of new students who wish to complete a 'taster course' in order to determine whether counselling is a suitable career, as recommended by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). In addition, there has been widespread recognition of the value of an understanding of counselling theory and skills to other 'people oriented' professions, such as human resources, whether in the private or public sector.

When you complete the Certificate in Introduction to Counselling you will be given the option to enter for the Education Development International (EDI) Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to Counselling.

EDI are specialists in supplying vocational learning programmes and are recognised as a national awarding organisation.

Being awarded the EDI Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to Counselling will demonstrate to potential employers that you have the necessary skills needed to carry out a role as a counsellor.
